What is a “warm colour”?
Different colours have undertones in them that can either classify them as a “cool” colour or a “warm” colour. For example, some shades of grey will have a blue undertone that gives them more of a cool appearance whereas some shades of grey will have a beige undertone making them warmer. Both tones can have a lighter or darker shade but the look they offer is very different from one another!
A cooler grey tone can often lend to a more light and airy feel. Cool colours can sometimes appear brighter as well. We associate cool colours with things that remind us of a cold temperature, such as snow or ice which carries a blue undertone. Warmer colours are associated with things we find cozy or earthy and tend to have more brown undertones.
Decisions, Decisions!
There are so many different style options out there and everyone’s preference is different, but there is a lot to be said about a warm and neutral option. When you are re-designing a space, you need to consider the overall aesthetic of your home. If you have primarily cool colours in your space, a warm toned bathroom may feel a bit out of place when you look at the overall picture of your home.
Once you have determined what tone you are comfortable with, it’s time to consider shades. The size of your bathroom and your shower or tub space is also something that comes into play when making this decision. As a general rule, lighter colours will make a space appear larger, whereas darker colours have a tendency to close a space in. Lighting is a big player here as well. If you have a smaller area but have a large source of natural light, darker colours may not appear so harsh as they are brightened significantly by the natural lighting in the space. If you are relying mainly on light fixtures and/or pot-lights, lighter shades may help you achieve a softer look.
With Luxury Vinyl Plank and Wood-Look porcelain tile options available at large, it can be a great addition to an earthy and neutral bathroom space. Both options are waterproof and offer different benefits. In addition, a multi-shaded look in your shower or tub space can lend to the warmth in the space. While it does add a bit more of a pattern which can appear busy in some cases, if you keep the rest of the space neutral, you’re in the clear! A multi-shade subway tile can give your shower or tub dimension and movement as well! You can also change up the shape of your tiles… 5″ x 5″ wall tiles are making a fast comeback!
